Astrological Eclipses

On the evening news, you'll only hear about eclipses when they occur someplace interesting, usually in your own back yard about once every twenty years. In fact, solar and lunar eclipses occur in pairs every six months or so in what we call "Eclipse Seasons". Sometimes you get a bonus: two lunars and a solar, or two solars and a lunar in the space of a single month. Solar eclipses can range in intensity from the moon's just clipping the sun to the dramatic total eclipse. A Lunar eclipse can range from an imperceptible darkening of the lunar disk, to complete disappearance. Unlike solar eclipses, a lunar eclipse is generally visible to half the planet. The importance of eclipses in astrology has long been known, but is still not clearly understood.

Glossary; Bibliography; Index.

Comment: The result of years of patient study & observation. The author started by studying Ptolemy & other ancient texts. The degree of an eclipse is an sensitive point. The eclipse plays out according to the sign it is in, its planetary ruler, and the sign & house of the ruler. Other planets in hard aspect also play a part (remember to check directions & progressions). It's generally agreed that the effects of a solar eclipse last as long in years as the eclipse lasted in hours, but Teal had a problem with lunar eclipses. They seemed to last far longer than the month per hour laid down by the ancients. She concluded that lunars last as long as solars, but that their effects are primarily psychological & social, in contrast to solars, where the effect is outward & political.

What kind of effect depends on various factors. North node eclipses bring a rush of new energies, which is often disruptive. South node eclipses suck energy away, destabilizing existing structures. The effects of eclipses last, on average, three and a half years. If, during this time, Saturn makes a hard aspect to the degree, effects can be felt.

Much more in this fascinating book.

Llewellyn, 275 pages.

Appendix 1: William Lilly's An Easie and Familiar Method Whereby to Judge the Effects depending on Eclipses, either of the sun or moon, of 1652. Appendix 2: Eclipse list for the 20th century (1900-2000 inclusive). Select bibliography, index.

Comment: Direct from Maggie Hyde, one of Derek Appleby's associates, this is his second book, from 1989, written in partnership with Maurice McCann, who is still very much alive.

This book starts with an exposition of the great eclipse of Monday, April 8, 1652 (NS), 10:30 am, London. As this occurred at the very height of the English astrological renaissance, the were many contemporary commentaries. The authors quote from accounts by John Booker, George Wharton, Nicholas Culpeper, and William Lilly. Lilly's comments, published in his Annus Tenebrosus ("shady year") of 1651, were astute. So, in the first part of their book, Appleby & McCann set out to explain how to interpret eclipses in mundane affairs, with Lilly & Ptolemy as their guides. (Lilly wrote more than Christian Astrology, we should bring his other books back into print.) Chapter 4, Three Kings, concerns Kings George V, Edward VIII, George VI & the remarkable events of 1936, as indicated by the eclipses of 1935-6. Chapter 5 applies eclipses to the Battle of Britain, of 1940, chapter 7 deals with Nigeria in the 1960's, chapter 8 traces aircraft disasters to the progressed (and relocated) Kitty Hawk chart (first powered airflight) of December 17, 1903. These disasters include that of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986, and the role eclipses played. Chapter 8, Two Disasters, are the Titanic and Chernobyl. Chapter 9, Europe Ablaze, concerns the formation of the Third Reich & the build-up to WWII. Much of this is based on secondary progressions, which is a sub-theme of the book.

The next three chapters deal with eclipses in natal charts. As you might expect, Lavinia's marriage did not turn out so well, Pat's babies (five) included one still-born, White Man's Burden is the story of one of the last of the British colonists, George, born in 1912, who had an eventful life in South Africa. Each of these chapters is extensive, the last is 30 pages & includes numerous charts & diagrams.

The final chapter, Conclusions, sums up the findings of the book. Eclipses are seen as means by which progressions may manifest, but if eclipses are not available, progressions may make use of a variety of other triggers, including ordinary new & full moons. In this final chapter, Appleby & McCann have a look at the Black Monday stock market crash of October 19, 1987. This is a book as notable for its use of progressions as well as eclipses.

Comment: Of her three books on eclipses, this is the best. This was out of print for several years, I am pleased the AFA has recently (May 2002) reprinted it. The prenatal eclipse is the last solar (not lunar) eclipse prior to your birth, it reveals karma from previous lives, karmic relations & the problems we must solve to gain karmic progress. The prenatal eclipse is generally found in the vicinity of the north or south node. Delineates prenatals in signs, houses, in aspect to other planets, transits & progressions to them, even solar returns to prenatal eclipse positions. Includes tables of eclipses from 1900 to 1999. The classic book on prenatals.

AFA, 114 pages, paper.

Special note: Jansky's Interpreting the Eclipses is out of print. The problem that stops reprints is copyright ownership. My previous notes on the subject were mistaken. Copyright on Jansky's books will not expire anytime soon.
