Dr. K.S. Charak is the Head of the Department of Surgery at the Indira Gandhi ESI Hospital at Jhilmil, in Delhi. He holds an M.S. (Surgery) and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (UK). As befits a surgeon, he is as serious & sober as they get. He was once closely associated with K.N. Rao, but this association has ended. He is the honorary editor of bi-monthly Vedic Astrology & author of numerous, excellent, astrology books.

The third edition adds a chapter on chart matching to an already excellent work. Charak's two-volume set is not only a teaching manual, it is also useful as an on-going reference. 	JATAKALANKARA, A treasure house of planetary yogas - translated by K.S. Charak, $20.00 Contents: Preface 1. Chapter on nomenclature 2. Chapter on houses 3. Chapter on yogas 4. Chapter on lineage Index Comment: The text is nearly four centuries old & consists of over 100 verses in Sanskrit (included in the text). Charak does not give the original author (if known), but does say the book is written in "a very charming meter called the Sraghara Chhanda. This particular meter is characterized by four lines to a verse, each line consisting of twenty-one letter units which follow the formula: SSS SIS SII III ISS ISS ISS" (pg. 3) From the back cover we learn the book includes a brief introduction to the 12 houses & planetary interrelationships, A detailed treatement of each house with descriptions of planetary combinations relevant to each, A chapter on yogas, with reference to the individual's physical, mental, intellectual, financial, sexual & social status, A detailed account of various medical ailments (of interest to Charak himself), Numerous yogas that determine life expectancy, The results of the exchange of house lords, A special chapter on Visha-Kanya. This book was previously serialized in Charak's bimonthly Vedic Astrology Journal. For publication as a book, the text was carefully revised & all calculations checked. The book includes the translated text as well as extensive commentary & practical examples. UMA Publications, 172 pages.

The maasa pravesha; 13. Summary; Index. Comment: Varshaphala, or Tajika, is the Vedic equivalent of the solar return, accomplished by use of 16 Tajika yogas. In Tajika, aspects, friends & enemies, masculine/feminine planets all differ from the classic norms of Parasara. Unique are the annual lords, the 16 yogas, certain sensitive points (sahams), the Muntha & the Tri-Pakaki Map. One of the best books of its kind in English, with many case studies. UMA Publications, 213 pages. Special note: We also have a few copies of the first edition, from 1993. In the Preface to the Third Edition, Charak tells us that in the Third Edition, the entire text has been completely revised and updated. The chapter on Yogas has been enlarged and some new material added to it. (pg. iii) I regret that a casual inspection found few changes. In both editions, each chapter begins and ends on the same pages, which includes Chapter 10, on Yogas. Specifically, table X-3, pgs. 146-150, still contains the same 16 yogas. Same yogas, same pages, as the first edition. What is different, however, is the presence of K.N. Rao, Charak's one-time associate. In the first edition, but not the third: Acknowledgements: I am deeply indebted to Shri K.N. Rao.... (pg. iii) This page is missing in the 3rd edition. About the Author, pg. v: In the first edition, but missing in the 3rd. Foreword, by K.N. Rao, pg. vii: In the first edition, missing in the 3rd. Page 92, footnote 2, in the first edition includes a reference to K.N. Rao. In the same footnote in the 3rd edition, the reference has been removed. Page 199: Conclusion 9, on page 199, has been removed from the 3rd edition. It began, Shri K.N. Rao has employed the Parashari principles, including Parashari aspects, to the annual chart with sound results.... Aside from these changes, and the first edition's slightly worn cover, the first and third editions appear identical in all significant respects.
