Comment: Saraswathy translated the Tamil translation by Kadalangudi (her father), or, as it appears on the title page, she "transcreated" it. Includes slokas, presumably the original Sanskrit. The propitations of Mars are entirely in Sanskrit. Dr. Mrs. K.N. Saraswathy is "Asia's leading woman-astrologist-counsellor", is internationally reputed, and has "more than fifty years of experience in practising Hindu astrology..." (Thought you might find that of interest.)

Navamsa & its significance.

Comment: On the back cover, it says, True Astrology - Basic and Traditional Concepts is not a conventional & obtuse book on Astrology. A person who accepts Astrology as a dynamic, wonderful, majestic, practical & humanistic science has written it. To him, Astrology is, at bottom, a critism of life.

Judging by the pictures on the cover, I would guess the people pictured there are the author, his wife, and two sons.

Appendix 1:
Star areas in Aries/Leo/Sagittarius
Star areas in Taurus/Virgo/Capricorn
Star areas in Gemini/Libra/Aquarius
Star areas in Cancer/Scorpio/Pisces

Appendix 2:
Sub-sub area in each sub; Stars, subs & sub-subs.

Comment: Divide each of the nakshatras into four parts (padas). Starting with the first pada of the first nakshatra (Ashwini) and going straight through to the last pada of the last nakshatra (Revati), assign the signs of the zodiac (and their ruling planet) to each, in order. But we need more precision on the ascendant than this. Take each nakshatra & divide into nine parts. Allot the nine parts in the same proportions as found for the nine mahadasa periods, using this formula: Each nakshatra has 800 minutes of arc. 800 / 120 x dasa years of the planet = the sub area for each planetary part of the nakshatra. Eg, Ketu 46 minutes 40 seconds; Venus 2 degrees, 13 minutes, 20 seconds; Sun 40 minutes exactly; Moon 1 degree, 6 minutes 40 seconds, etc. These are the Kalamsa, or sub-areas.

On page 10, Khullar says he got this theory from the work of R. Gopalkrishna (aka Meena) and K.S. Krishnamoorthy (sic). Khullar compares Kalamsa to Navamsa: Kalamsa is the ninth part of a nakshatra, navamsa is the ninth part of a rasi. What use can be made of this? Here is an extract from the chapter on the second house: Sixth cusp: If the sub-sub lord of the sixth cusp establishes link with the second house through its star lord then the native will try to gain wealth through the significations of the sixth house viz service, poultry farms, dealing in medicines, labour oriented jobs, dealing in leather or plastics or loans, etc. The sub lord of the sub-sub lord of the sixth cusp will qualify the results as indicted below: (Table follows for houses 1 - 12.) In the chapter on the second house, Khullar does this for each of the 12 linking cusps. He takes a similar, detailed approach, throughout the book.

November, 2008: The new, revised edition of this book is now available. The table of contents (above) is unchanged, but 103 pages of new material have been added. In the revised Acknowledgement, the author gives thanks to three individuals, two of whom are customers of this store. One of them brought this new edition to my attention. Which is to emphasize that you, as Vedic astrology students, make a difference.

I have one remaining copy of the First edition, which has 306 pages. Its price has been reduced, from $25.00, to $18.00. To order, click on the center button, below.

YOUR TRUE HOROSCOPE: Birth Time Rectification - S.P. Khullar, $20.00
Contents: Acknowledgement; Introduction;

1. Human Being & Astrology: Modern gynecologists opinion of human birth; Human being & the view point of Vedanta; Human being & astrology;

2. Theories of Rectification of Birth Time: Tattva sidhant or nadi theory of rectification; The pre-natal epoch;

3. The Ruling Planet & Construction of Horoscopes: Ruling planet & schools of thought; Application of ruling planets & construction of horoscope; Calculation of moon's period in a day;

4. Construction of True Horoscope: Formation of ascendant; Formation of other cuspal positions; Rectification of cuspal positions to reflect genetical connections; Composite approach to the rectification of chart; 14 very detailed rectifications.

Comment: Kalamsa theory (in the book above) only works if you have a very accurate birth time, and so this book. The survey of various methods of rectification is detailed, with useful tables & analysis. The technique that Khullar settles on is an horary one: He uses the precise time he is asked to rectify a chart and finds links between that time, and the final rectified time of birth, using subs & sub-subs. His demonstrations are progressive, staring with a question of half an hour, to half a day, to day of the week, month or even year, showing how the basic technique works in various circumstances. Once the basic time has been fixed, it is further refined, either by events in the life (eg, accidents), or on the basis of the reason behind asking for the time in the first place (eg, I want to get married, but don't have my birth-time). Khullar uses Placidus cusps & true node. The fourteen fully-worked rectifications at the end comprise half the book.

HORARY ASTROLOGY AND CUSPAL INTERLINKS - S.P. Khullar, $37.00
Contents: Introduction; Horary astrology & its philosphy

4. Questions relating to the fourth house
5. Questions relating to the fifth house
6. Questions relating to the sixth house
7. Questions relating to the seventh house

11. Questions relating to the eleventh house
12. Questions relating to the twelfth house
13. Minor events & selection of lucky time

14. Appendix A. Primary & supporting or linked cusps for questions from each of the twelve houses.

Comment: This is Krishnamurti-based horary. To quote the appendix:

Genuineness of the horary chart is indicated if Moon or its Star lord appears in the Primary cusp as shown against the event or the Star lord appears in the supporting cusp and the Sub lord appears in the Primary cusp. For promise of the event, the Sub-Sub lords of the fixed ascendant and Primary cusp for the event should establish links through their Star lords and Sub lords with the Primary and Supporting cusps shown against the event. For fullfilment of promise the Sub-Sub lord of the 11th cusp should establish links through its Star lord and Sub lord with Primary & Supporting cusps. The promised event happens in the joint period of planets that are fruitful significators of Primary & supporting cusps shown against the event. Transit of Sun & Moon should be in the Stars the lords of which appear in the Primary cusp or be the significators of the Primary cusp in the chart.
The appendix is a useful summary of the book. In it, for the first house, for the question, "Proneness to disease", the Primary cusp is 1, the supporting or linked cusps are 6, 8, 12. Under the 12th house, "Gain in Investment", he gives the Primary cusp as 12, and the supporting or linked cusps as 2, 6, 12. The text in the bulk of the book is detailed, the writing is very good.

Comment: Interest in Khullar's techniques has been lively of late (2008). Here is what it says on the back of the book:

Key to Learn Sub Sub & Cuspal Interlinks Theory is written with the sole objective of enabling the readers to master the fundamental concepts of Cuspal Interlinks Theory as achieved by the participants in the Lessons presented in the Workshop conducted on MSN Groups KCIL.

Each lesson is written in simple, lucid and easy to learn style and has a Practice Exercise which provides the reader with an opportunity to test his comprehension. Answers of each Exercise are placed in the end of the book.

This book, however, is not a substitute for my book Kalamsa & Cuspal Interlinks Theory. If the reader masters the contents of this book, he will be able to use the concepts illustrated in my books on Natal and Horary Astrology much quicker and easier.

Sub Sub and Cuspal Interlinks Theory is in tune with the Navamsa & Nadiamsa concept of Nadi Astrology. The reader will find that it offers sound techniques of predictive astrology.

How to analyse the horoscope, to determine what is promised for the native for all walks of human life, has been explained in simple & scientific way. Whilst timing events & use of transits are often thought of as complex and incomprehensible, it is dealt with here in a very clear and practical way with many actual case studies.

SHADBALA RAHASYAM: Mystery of sixfold potency of planets & their effect on celestial period - Krishna Kumar, $19.00

Impact of Shadbala on dasa results; 14. Application of Shadbala; Summary.

Tables: 1. Ahargana; 2. Days from 1st January to the end of the month; 3. Weekdays equivalent to remainders; 4. Mean solar daily motion; 5. Mean motion of Mars; 6. Mean motion of Jupiter; 7. Mean motion of Saturn; 8. Mercury's apogee product table; 9. Venus' apogee product table.

Comment: In the Foreword, K.S. Charak writes,

In today's world of computers, students often shirk from making lengthy calculations. However, many of the computer softwares give inaccurate results which need to be manually verified. Besides, almost all of them provide the planetary strength as a sum total of the six constituents of Shadbala and not of the individual constituents separately. For example, an idea of a planet's Sthanabala, Kaalabala or Cheshtabala, etc., is also of importance in predictive astrology besides the cumulative value of Shadbala. It is this aspect of the work under consideration that Krishna Kumar's contribution to astrology becomes specially commendable. Several works on the method of reckoning the Shadbala there have been, but none has so far dealt with the predictive utility of Shadbala as a whole, or of its constituents separately. This is the author's most significant contribution to the world of Vedic astrology. The book also includes chapters on the Bhavabala, or the strength of the houses, as well as Ishtabala/Kashtabala of planets. One chapter has been devoted to the use of Shadbala in assessing the dasha results of the planets. At the end, the author illustrates the principles of Shadbala by using them on actual example charts. The body of the text contains numerous references to astrological classics. (pgs. iv-v)

Comment: Subtitled, The Microscopic Analysis & Interpretation of the Natal Chart. You will note both the spelling of the various divisional charts, as well as the addition of several minor divisional charts.

On page 19, point 1.23 says there are a total of 20 divisional charts, of which only six are in general use: Rasi, Hora, Dreshkan, Navamansh, Dwadasansh & Trinshansh. To this, the Saptmansh chart is commonly added. Point 1.24: The addition of the Dashansh, Shodashansh & Shastyansh to the previous seven give the Dashvarg, or 10 divisional charts. Kumar then gives an additional six divisional charts, for a total of 16 of the 20 possible. Each of the 16 are weighted, by comparison to each of the others.

5. Miscellaneous: Mrityu Bhanga; Inter related destiny; Close brush with death; Navamsha clue to predicting death.

Comment: Rick Houck was the local expert in this area, pity his own longevity wasn't so hot. R.I.P.

On the back of the book, it says:

The correct determination of longevity is highly complex & has belied most of the astrologers. Yet, it is very important & is the most sought after. Even sage Parashar has admitted knowing longevity is difficult even for the gods. Almost all astrologers have expressed their views on the subject. Different methods of calculation - empirical or mathematical - have been mentioned in various texts. The book has tested many such tools of astrology for determination of longevity & has tried to find their effectiveness on over two hundred fifty nativities

The book has been presented like a research study covering both natural & unnatural deaths & the concept of "interlinked destinies" are more potent "maraks" or that certain specific house lords or "dasha" of lords of 3rd, 5th & 7th stars from the birth star are more likely killers. In the process it brings out the theory of destructive & constructive planets & that any planet if ill placed & badly afflicted may prove fatal, when empowered to do so by the influence of Jupiter & Saturn.

This truly is a research book. There is almost no exposition, only condensed case studies. Kumar, by the way, is one of the most common Indian surnames. It is unlikely the Lt. Col. is related to Krishna Kumar.

Comment: In the Preface, the author (self-published) claims 55 years of astrological experience, including writing for annual guidance on Zodiac signs, in Diamond Rashiphal. Its publication during 28 years inspired me to write astrological analysis on over 22,000 horoscopes, due to regularly increading demand by my aspirants. So, an Institute was formed in 1965 and got registered in 1969 to regulate further studies in Astral-Sciences. (pg. xix)

The opening sections are more introductory, while the second half is more traditional Vedic horoscope analysis, of the natal chart, divisional chart, or horary chart.

Institute of Astrological Sciences, 442 pages.
