Vedic Astrology:

Books by Chandulal Sakaralal Patel

C.S. Patel has been active since the mid 1950's. He has a special interest in odd corners of Parasara & the Deva Keralm generally. His books are useful, well-organized compilations of everything he can find about a given subject. They are quite good.

ARUDAH SYSTEM OF PREDICTION - C.S. Patel, $13.00
Contents:
1. Introduction; 2. Arudha pada; 3. Lagna padha (from nadis); 4. Upa-pada kundali; 5. Graha arudha; 6. Putra (mantra) pada; 7. Shatru (roga) pada; 8. Dara (kalatra-bharya) pada; 9. Bhagya (pitru) pada; 10. Mixed (vikrama-bhatru, etc.) pada.

Comment: Arudha defined: Jaimini has paid special attention to the aspect of planets - especially to the way in which they aspect their own sign. Apparently, there was a peculiar belief that the reflection was as good as the original, the reflecting medium being furnished by a planet as in the case of Pada or Upapada, or by a sign, as in the case of 'Bahya Rasi'. The old astrologers at the time of Jaimini believed that along with the sign he ruled, a planet aspected, with the same attention, another sign which had the same angle of incidence as the sign ruled by him had with the sign in which he was placed. In other words, a sign had its reflection in its ruler planet (mirror), and the sign corresponding to the reflection was as powerful as the original one. The sign, agreeing with or corresponding to the reflection was called pada or "foot" by Jaimini & his colleague astrologers. The Pada of the Ascendant or Lagna pada is taken by Jaimini as the basis in determining the momentary prospects of an individual. The seventh & twelfth houses from the Pada give special results by means of the planets present therein. The remaining houses give results just in the way in which houses from the sign occupied by the Significatory Planet do. (pg. 3, as quoted from Prof. K.V. Abhyankar in The Upadesa Sutra of Jaimini, 1951, pg. 51)

Aside from Jaimini, the Arudha system can also be found in Parasara, chapter 4, verses 23-24-25-26, in the Prasna Marga, chapters 8 & 16, in the Uttara Kalamrita, chapter 4, verses 34-40, and the Deva Keralam. It is believed this is the first time verses from these various sources have been put in one place & studied. Includes Sanskrit slokas & numerous chart examples.

NADI ASTROLOGY - C.S. Patel, $16.00
Contents:
Preface; 1. List of nadi amsas; 2. Longitudes of nadi amsas; 3. Verification of nadi amsas; 4. Poorva ardha & uttara ardha; 5. Nadi literature; 6. The standard horoscope; 7. Nadis & nadi practitioners; 8. Surya & other planets' nadis; 9. Prediction of nadi amsas; 10. Yogas; 11. "Paryaya" cycle of planet; 12. Result of bhavas; 13. Predictive tools; 14. Bhrigu bindu; 15. Eventful years in one's life.

Comment: Chapter 7, Nadis & practitioners, is an illuminating examination of real vs: fake nadi readers. A real nadi reader bases his work on which of 3600 12' arcs turns up on the ascendant (about 48 seconds of time), which enables the reader to determine which of 3600 basic patters of destiny the person in question may have. Fakes are based Mantra nadis, which give control over various low or profane spirits (or, as K.N. Rao has remarked, spirits gain control over the reader). Both real & fake readers give accurate descriptions of the past, though by entirely different means. Only a real nadi reader can foresee the future, the fakes all fail. (Elsewhere in the chapter, a survey of opinions, it is remarked that the spooks surrounding fake readers can attack clients & destroy families, a good reason to avoid them.)

So a real nadi reader uses Nadi Amsas. There are 150 to a sign, which gives 1800 for the zodiac. Each nadi amsa has two parts, Purva-bhaga & Uttar-bhaga, making 3600 pieces in all. The 150 numbered, named sections are counted from 1 to 150 in movable signs; in fixed signs, 150 to 1; in common signs, 76 to 150, followed by 1 to 75. There is a great deal more to it. The author has compiled a great many references into one handy volume. This is the best book on Nadis that I have seen.

Shubha-abde-krura-abde; 9. Nidhanamsa/ashtamamsa; 10. Eventful years in one's life; 11. Navamsa-transit; 12. Cross-positions of planets in rasi & navamsa; 13. Selected verses; 14. Comment: In the preface, the author writes, I have ventured into an uncharted area of Nadi Granthas & classical texts, where the concept of "Navamsa" has been extensively & innovatingly applied to solve various techniques of predictions. I do not think it fit, to enumerate the innumerable techniques discussed in the book here, but I would like to state that many technical terms such as, Nidhanamsa, Ashtamamsa, Pushkaranavamsa, Bhava-suchaka-navamsa, the 64th Navamsa, Vikatamsa, Bhava-madhya-navamsa & many more are explained, showing their correct impart. (pg. v)

With Sanskrit slokas from the original source material, sample charts, tables, etc. An excellent book.
