Medical Astrology: Page 1 Page 2 Page 3

For medieval medical astrology, see the Medieval Astrology page.

In astrological circles it's been said so often that we forget the truth of the it: Hippocrates was as much an astrologer as a doctor. The practical uses for astrology in medicine are endless and sometimes crucial to life itself. Unlike some modern drug serums, when astrology is used as an aid to traditional medicine, it is rarely, if ever, harmful to the patient. There is only ancient prejudice to lose, and much to gain, by the serious study of astrology by the medical profession.

Rules for Operations, as given in the Encyclopaedia of Medical Astrology, by H.L. Cornell, M.D.

THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MEDICAL ASTROLOGY - H.L. Cornell, $89.95 - Directly from us: $74.95
Contents:
Author's portrait; letter of introduction; Abbreviations & symbols used in the book; Cornell's birth chart; Introduction to the 2nd edition; Foreward; the Encyclopaedia.

Comment: From page 502, on Medical Astrology: In my years as a physician, I have, by the use of Astrology, been able to very quickly locate the seat of the disease, the cause of the trouble, the time when the patient began to feel uncomfortable, as based on the birth data of the patient, and this without even touching or examining the patient, and my intense desire to get this knowledge and wisdom before students and Healers in a classified form, is the reason for this Encyclopaedia.... When once you have discovered the cause of the disease, and understand its philosophy and the relation of the patient to the great Scheme of Nature, the matter of treatment I leave to you, and according to the System and Methods you may be using.

This is by far the best book ever written about medical astrology, even though it dates from 1933. An exhaustive, alphabetical listing of nearly every possible disease and symptom, diagnosed from an astrological point of view. Hundreds of useful hints, from chiropractic to rules for surgery, diet, planetary hours, colors, days of the week, weather & much, much more. You'll never exhaust this book. Indexed and cross-referenced. The one essential medical reference book. Click here for a pdf extract.

Bibliography

Comment: Originally published by Penguin Arkana in 1990, this second edition is revised & updated and, I presume, reset, as it looks nothing like Penguin's typesetting. (This second edition has larger, clearer type, a welcome improvement.)

Ridder-Patrick intended this book to be a comprehensive introduction, and it is. She works her way into the subject with the first two chapters. The first introduces causes of disease ("bad things happen", faulty maintenance, avoidance, resting, initiation, karma, intelligence, social & self-expression) as well as various models of "health", among them, the biomedical (body as machine) & holistic. Chapter 2 introduces the idea that the brain exists not so much to create rational thought, but as the ultimate defense against a hostile environment, ie, as a means of intelligent adaptation. This leads to the introduction of planets & aspects in chapter 3. She gives this short summary:

Planets = WHAT is happening
Signs = WHERE these processes take place
Aspects = HOW planets modify the physiological process of other planets
Houses = WHICH external influences affect health
Transits & Progressions = WHEN, timing, etc.
(slightly adapted from pg. 40)
She then gives detailed delineations of what each planet means, with Lilly's original notes (from Christian Astrology) included. She also deciphers Lilly into modern Plain English, which was a revelation to me (I've edited Lilly). (Pissing disease is diabetes, bloody-flux is dysentery, apoplexies are strokes, black jaundice is hepatitus, etc. I had not guessed any of these. Dear Jane: Could I interest you in an annotated edition of Richard Saunders?) The elements she ties to the Vedic vata, pitta & kapha.

Chapter 5 is on degree areas, and features the work Elsbeth & Reinhold Ebertin, as published in Anatomische Entsprechunen der Tierkreisgrade, which many of you have asked me for over the years, and which was previously unavailable. Ridder-Patrick gives it in English. She follows this with the degree areas of Maurice Wemyss, as published in Wheel of Life, which has long been out of print. She then gives lists of fixed stars relating to disease (positions as of 2006) as well as Arabic parts that concern health. Chapter 6, on the decumbiture chart, starts with Lilly's classic rules & goes on to include planetary hours (and how to calculate), with an extensive section on how to read them, complete with sample charts & more diagrams taken from Lilly. Chapter 7 is the practical business of being a medical astrologer. Chapter eight is a complete case study, a rather difficult one. The final chapter is a compilation of various herbs & their astrological rulerships, along with notes on the Virgo, Pisces & Scorpio approaches to health & healing, biochemic remedies, acupuncture, color, sound, astrocartography, and gems & minerals. The book finishes with notes on elemental imbalances & what to do about them. At the end of every chapter there are references. The bibliography at the end runs four full pages & is one of the best I have ever seen.

I thought this was going to be just another astro-medical book. There already are many excellent ones. This is one of the best of them.

Appendices: A. Calculation of Midpoints; B. Anatomical Meaning of Zodiacal Degrees; C. Astrological Birth Control; D. Decumbiture Charts; E. Supplement Recommendations; F. Herbal Recommendations. Bibliography: General astrology; Medical astrology; Health & healing.

Comment: A fascinating discussion of medical astrology, based on the author's many decades of observation & research (this is her third book). For each of the many topics (listed above), the author supplies case histories, horoscope analysis, specific midpoints, transits & progressions, as well as suggestions for specific supplements & herbs. Appendix B: Anatomical Meaning of Zodiacal Degrees, is based on the work of Mary Vohryzek (out of print, alas). The descriptions bear a casual relationship to the work of C.E.O. Carter (Encyclopedia of Psychological Astrology). Starck lists Carter's book in her bibliography, but apparently did not see the connections. All-in-all an essential & classic book.

Earth Medicine Press, 335 pages.

Contents includes: Astro-nutritional theory; Proteins in the diet; Carbohydrates and metabolism; Fats in the diet; Enzymes, body catalysts; Hormones, chemical messengers; Vitamins in the diet; Minerals and cell salts; The nodal chart; Elective surgery and transits; Times of birth and death. 180 pages. DECUMBITURES & DIURNALS - Joseph Silveira deMello, $16.95
Contents: Decumbitures; Diurnals; Appendix: Saturn cycles.

Comment: Decumbitures are charts drawn for the moment a person "takes to his bed", eg, falls ill, or, in modern parlance, when he phones for an ambulance. DeMello's first example is for Rudolph Vallentino's collapse on August 15, 1926, 11:50 am EDT, in New York, as reported in the papers & delineated by Evangeline Adams. (He died shortly afterwards.) Decumbiture is a medieval technique that's been successfully revived in recent years. Decumbiture charts tell the extent of the illness & its outcome, either recovery or otherwise.

A diurnal chart is based on your birthday. Using your place and time of birth, substitute today's date, and you have a dirurnal for the day. In effect, you have a chart for the day's transits, with angles unique to yourself. The degrees on the angles, from one day to the next, move about 1 degree a day. So you may easily see when a diurnal's angles will hit sensitive points in your chart, and when transiting planets will be conjunct them. This is a useful method of forecasting. The author gives many examples from his own life (born November 3, 1925, 6:04:16 pm EST, Newport, RI). This is a serious, solid book.

AFA, 123 pages, oversize.
